If you recently moved, lost your keys, loaned out a key and didn’t get it back, or want to have one key for both your front and back doors, consider opting for  Smart Key locks from Kwikset. We all know the challenges of re-keying locks since you usually need the services of a locksmith. With Kwikset’s innovative security technology, you can learn how to rekey your own Kwikset Smart Key in less than a minute.

Before we get started, it’s important to verify the type of Kwikset lock you have in your doors. See whether you can see a tiny oval hole located next to the keyhole. If so, that’s a Smart Key Kwikset lock.

Kwikset Smart Key locks allow you to re-key your Smart Key in several easy steps. Follow these Kwikset Smart Key Re-key instructions:

Things You’ll Need

  • The current Kwikset key for your Smart Key lock
  • A Smart Key Re-key Learn Tool - Often provided with the Kwikset lock
  • The new key that you want to use for re-keying - Has to be a Kwikset Key

Step-By-Step Guide

  • Insert the functioning or original key into the Smart Key lock and turn it 90° clockwise.
  • With the key still in the Smart Key lock, take the Smart Key Learn tool and insert it into the small hole that you see directly next to the keyhole. Put the tool firmly inside the hole until you feel or hear a tiny click. Once you feel or hear the tiny click, remove the Smart Key Learn tool.
  • The next step in learning how to rekey your Kwikset Smart Key is to remove the original key without rotating the SmartKey lock and then insert the new Kwikset key into the keyhole. Insert the new Kwikset key all the way into the lock.
  • Rotate the key 90° counterclockwise until you hear a definite click. Make sure that the key and lock are straight up and down.
  • To ensure that the Smart Key lock is re-keyed successfully, keep the key in the lock and rotate it back again 90° clockwise. Try to remove the key. If you can’t remove the key, then the re-keying process was successful.
  • After doing this, you can now rotate the key back and remove it. Confirm that the new key can both lock and unlock your door. If it does, you now have a working key you can use.
